22 THE STAR SPORTS • Monday, September 9, 2024 @JamaicaStar www.facebook.com/JamaicaStar • www.jamaica-star.com LIVINGSTON SCOTT STAR Writer T he ISSA Manning Cup schoolboy football competition gets into full gear this afternoon, following Saturday’s opening day. The feature games of the day will be over in Group E, where St Jago High and Wolmer’s Boys’ renew their rivalry from last season, and Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive High School and Denham Town High School meet in the West Kingston derby. Although Wolmer’s topped Group G last season with 25 points, three more than St Jago, they failed to beat the Spanish Town-based school in two outings, losing 2-0 at home at Heroes’ Circle and drawing 1-1 at Monk Street in Spanish Town. The Jerome Waite-coached Wolmer’s will have it all to do again today when they travel to Monk Street to face the home team. Meanwhile, Tivoli Gardens will start as favourites when they take on Denham Town at Tivoli High. Tivoli finished second to Jamaica College in Group B last year and with a number of key players returning, they should have the edge against a Denham Town team that only managed six points from 10 games last season. On Saturday’s opening day, defending champions Mona High blanked Waterford High 7-0, while in the daCosta Cup opener, title holders Clarendon College turned back Denbigh 2-1 in the competition open to rural high schools. livingston.scott@gleanerjm.com St Jago, Wolmer’s renew Manning Cup rivalry TODAY’S GAMES Zone B Tarrant v Charlie Smith at Jaciscera Park at 3:30 p.m. Gaynstead v Jonathan Grant at Gaynstead at 3:30 p.m. Zone C Penwood v Kingston College at Maverley at 3:30 p.m. Cumberland v Campion at Cumberland at 3:30 p.m. Meadowbrook v Jose Marti at Meadowbrook at 3:30 p.m. Zone E St Mary’s College v Edith Dalton James at St Mary’s College at 3:30 p.m. St Jago v Wolmer’s at St Jago at 3:30 p.m. Tivoli v Denham Town at Tivoli High at 3:30 p.m. Waterford High’s Yashmaru Hanson (centre) is trapped between Mona High’s Sean Leighton (left) and Savi-K Morton during the opening match of the ISSA/WATA Manning Cup football competition at Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday. Cornwall College rallied from one goal down to thrash Herbert Morrison Technical High School 4-1 in their opening match of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition on Saturday night. “I wouldn’t say it is a statement game, we have to honour our fixtures. It is the first game of the season, I like the enthusiasm of the players,” Whitmore said. “When they fell behind they came back in the game and pushed on to win the game. I believe it was a decent performance by the guys. It being the first game of the season, we have to just take it one game at a time and see how we can improve each game,” Whitmore told STAR Sports . The Montego Bay derby, a highly anticipated game, sawMontegonians come out in their numbers. In the Zone A fixture at Montego Bay Sports Complex, Herbert Morrison took a 1-0 lead seven minutes in the game courtesy of Quezayne Channer. However, Cornwall swiftly levelled the scoreline in the 11th minute through Shaheem Bernard, and wasted no time in taking the lead, when Mekhi Foster added to their tally by scoring in the 21st minute. If Herbert Morrison harboured any hopes of a revival in the second half, Miguel Arnold transformed those thoughts by scoring to establish a two-goal cushion in the 53rd minute. Captain Dante Escoffery, in the 80th minute, finished off their opponents with Cornwall’s fourth goal. Meanwhile, Herbert Morrison’s assistant coach, Gary Grant, says the team will have to do more work in training. “We have to go back on the training ground and see if we can execute a bit better. We have to stay focused and regroup again. Our mindset was to go out there and give a challenge, which we did. After a few minutes of scoring, the players lost concentration. That is one of the key things we have to work on,” Grant said. ashley.anguin@gleanerjm.com ‘Tappa’ encouraged by Cornwall’s resilience OTHER RESULTS: Clarendon 2 Denbigh 1 Manchester 3 Cross Keys 0 (DNS - forfeit points) Christiana 7 Troy 0 Alphansus Davis 1 Knox College 0 Bellefield High 2 Mile Gully 1 Alston High 0 Holmwood Tech 4 Porus High 1 Vere Tech 4 Old Harbour 0 Foga Road 0 Glenmuir High 5 Kemps Hill 0 Garvey Maceo 7Winston Jones 0 Paul Bogle 0 Yallahs High 1 St Thomas Tech 0 (DNS - forfeit) Happy Grove 3 Robert Lightbourne 2 Seaforth 4 Port Antonio 3 St Mary Tech 0 --DNS denotes Did Not Show Cornwall College’s Miguel Arnold (second right) tries to claim possession before Herbert Morrison Technical’s Ranaldo Blackwood (right) during the opening match of ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition at Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday.
