CALL KIMMY 8708313 CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC): S t Lucia Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre has declared September 27 Julien Alfred Day, in honour of her historic performances at the recently concluded Paris Olympics. The Prime Minister made the declaration during a pre- Cabinet press briefing on Monday, where he not only announced the national holiday, but also plans to celebrate Alfred when she returns to the island on September 24. The 23-year-old Alfred created history by winning St Lucia’s first-ever gold medal at the Olympics, when she sprinted to victory in the women’s 100 metres in a national record time of 10.72 seconds. She also copped silver in the 200 metres. Among the events planned for Alfred are a motorcade, school rallies, and a mural unveiling. The celebrations will begin on September 24 when Alfred returns to the island, where she will be greeted with a motorcade along the East Coast. On September 25, national school rallies will be held at Soufriere Mini Stadium and La Resource playing field to celebrate her achievements. The following day, Alfred will visit the Ciceron Primary School for the unveiling of a mural in her honour, followed by what officials have described as “massive announcements”. Julien Alfred Day will be celebrated with a free concert at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on the evening of the holiday, with Saint Lucians being encouraged to come out in large numbers to honour their national icon. St Lucia’s PM declares national holiday in honour of Alfred LONDON (AP): H arry Kane marked his 100th game for England with two goals and celebrations with his family in a 2-0 win over Finland in the UEFA Nations League yesterday. Presented with a golden cap before kickoff and playing in gold boots at Wembley Stadium, the England captain was swarmed by his teammates after scoring his first goal in true Kane style. He beat a Finnish defender before unleashing a powerful shot which was still rising as it clipped the underside of the crossbar. The Bayern Munich star’s second goal came with an assist from one of England’s new faces as Noni Madueke played the pass for Kane to hit a shot that took a slight deflection – not that it mattered to the crowd which gave Kane a standing ovation when he was substituted off soon after. It was the second straight 2-0 win for interim England manager Lee Carsley, who took over on a temporary basis after Gareth Southgate stepped down following England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Carsley could yet remain in the position for a while longer if the search for Southgate’s permanent successor extends beyond the next international break in October. England are playing in the second tier of the Nations League and are level on six points at the top of their group with Greece, who beat Ireland 2-0. GERMANY, NETHERLANDS DRAW Denzel Dumfries’ goal helped salvage a 2-2 draw for the Netherlands against Germany in the top division of the Nations League. Tijjani Reijnders’ goal gave the Netherlands the lead after just one and a half minutes in Amsterdam, but Germany had the lead at halftime thanks to goals from Deniz Undav and Joshua Kimmich. Germany and the Netherlands are familiar foes who have played seven times since 2018, and most recently in March. For the Netherlands, it was the first game since coach Ronald Koeman ruled forward Steven Bergwijn out of his plans following the forward’s move to the Saudi Arabian league. Koeman suggested Bergwijn, who was on the team at Euro 2024, lacked ambition because of the move. Germany were without Niclas Füllkrug after the West Ham striker struggled with an Achilles tendon problem and was replaced in the lineup by Stuttgart’s Undav. In the same group, Hungary and Bosnia-Herzegovina drew 0-0 in the other top-tier game. Also yesterday, Pavel Sulc scored twice to lift the Czech Republic to a 3-2 win over Ukraine, and Georgia beat Albania 1-0. Kane scores twice in his 100th game for England Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia celebrates after winning the women’s 100 metres final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
