A daily pill might just silence your snores. Scientists have found that a drug commonly used for epilepsy, sulthiame, could drastically cut symptoms of sleep apnoea – including loud snoring, choking, and gasping for air. Unveiled at the European Respiratory Society congress, the findings suggest the pill could offer a lifeline to the one in four Britons suffering from this condition. Professor Jan Hedner from the University of Gothenburg explained, “Many struggle with the bulky air-blowing machines used for treatment, so this pill could be a game-changer.” Dark chocolate may hold secret to sharper vision E ating dark chocolate can improve a person’s eyesight. A new study claims that just a small amount of the sweet treat is beneficial for vision as it can help to correct the function of blood vessels. Boffins in Italy conducted a test on 20 healthy adults, with an average age of 24, who were either given 20 grams of dark chocolate or 7.5 grams of milk chocolate. Two hours after eating, those who had tucked into the dark chocolate had their retinal blood flow expanded by four per cent whereas the figure was only 2.75 per cent for the milk chocolate eaters. Professor Giuseppe Querques, of the Universita Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan, said: “The most surprising thing was that a relatively small dose of dark chocolate can modify the motility and dilation of retinal vessels.” Belly fat linked to chronic pain C arrying extra weight around your stomach? It could be causing you pain all over your body. Shocking new research from the University of Western Australia reveals that people with more belly fat are more likely to suffer from chronic pain in different areas, and women are hit the hardest. Scientists looked at data from over 32,000 participants and found a clear link between abdominal fat and body-wide pain. “The effects were stronger in women due to differences in fat distribution and hormones,” the experts said.
