CALL 876 7070107 LONDON, England: A rsenal left arch-rivals Tottenham’s stadium with a win for the third season in a row after Gabriel Magalhaes’ second-half header settled a feisty and physical north London derby in the English Premier League yesterday. Tottenham had Arsenal pegged back for much of the game but couldn’t make their chances count, as the visitors weathered the pressure before Gabriel secured a 1-0 win by scoring in the 64th minute. The Brazilian centre back lost his marker and met a corner from Bukayo Saka with a thumping header from the middle of the box. “It is a big derby and we are so happy to win here,” said Gabriel, who celebrated boisterously in front of the away fans after the final whistle. “Let’s enjoy it now.” The goal came largely against the run of play but secured a vital victory for Arsenal, who are already two points behind defending champions Manchester City and could ill afford to drop more points ahead of a trip to the Etihad Stadium next weekend. “We had to work really hard as you saw, we knew it was going to be a difficult game,” said Arsenal midfielder Jorginho, who captained Arsenal in Odegaard’s absence. “We had key players missing but we are a total team, the whole squad. We know that whoever comes on will be ready to help the team.” It was a very different game compared to last year’s fixture, when Arsenal went 3-0 up before holding off a late fightback to win 3-2. But it had its usual share of physical tackles and temper flare-ups, with seven bookings handed out in the first half alone. “It has been the story of our season so far, we played in their half and created chances but we lack a bit of belief in the final third,” Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said. “That’s what we need to fix. It was always going to be decided in moments and they capitalised on theirs.” Arsenal only had three senior outfield players available on the bench, including transfer deadline-day signing Raheem Sterling, who came on for his Gunners debut in the 80th minute. – AP Arsenal beat Tottenham in feisty north London derby FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida: L ionel Messi made a successful return after a lengthy absence, scoring two goals and assisting on the third to lead Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night. The Argentine star and eight- time Ballon d’Or winner had not played with Inter Miami since June 1 because of national team commitments and a right- ankle injury sustained in a 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final on July 14. “A little bit tired because of the heat and humidity of Miami, but I wanted to return so much after such a long time away,” Messi said in Spanish on the Apple TV broadcast after the game. “I started training with the group and began to feel better.” Messi, who resumed practising three weeks ago, showed no rust or ill effects from the injury with his performance. He scored twice in a four-minute span midway through the first half that negated an early goal by Philadelphia. “What he did was more typical than other things that happened tonight,” Inter Miami coach coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino said in Spanish. “I am happy that he finished the game and completed the 90 minutes. He felt fine.” Without Messi, Miami went 8-2 and clinched a MLS play- off spot. Miami (19-4-5) also took the lead in the Supporters Shield table with 62 points. “It’s nice to see that his injury has healed and that he’s as effective as he was before,” Inter Miami midfielder Julian Gressel said. Luis Suárez had one assist and clinched Miami’s win with a strike on Messi’s assist during second-half stoppage time. It was Suárez’s 17th goal of the season. Suárez had a goal in the 44th minute overturned after a video review ruled an offside infraction. “As the game progressed we ran the risk of not controlling the ball,” Martino said. “From the last 30 minutes of the first half we managed to handle the ball better.” – AP Messi scores twice on return Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes (No. 6) heads the ball to score a goal during the English Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur in London yesterday. AP Philadelphia Union midfielders Jack McGlynn (16) and Leon Flach (31) defend against Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi (10) during the first half of a MLS match on Saturday night. Inter Miami won 3-1. AP CLASSIFIEDS/SPORTS
