22 THE STAR SPORTS • Monday, September 16, 2024 @JamaicaStar www.facebook.com/JamaicaStar • www.jamaica-star.com GREGORY BRYCE Staff Reporter A f ter struggl ing to score in their opening match, Kingston College’s (KC) coach Vassell Reynolds expressed satisfaction with their returns and goal-spread in Saturday’s 18-rout of Cumberland High in the ISSA/WATA Manning Cup football match at Stadium East. It was a day of high-scoring as Jamaica College thumped Ascot High 11-0, St George’s College smashed Papine 10-0 and Excelsior High nailed Bridgeport High 7-1. In the context of so many goals being scored even St Catherine High’s 4-0 thrashing of Holy Trinity High appeared miniscule. The ‘Purples’, who were held 2-2 by unfancied Penwood High in their opening match, turned up the throttle and had six different scorers. They led 9-0 heading into the half-time break and Reynolds was pleased with their unwillingness to ease up. “Overall, it wasn’t a bad performance, albeit the opponents were on the weaker side. The number of goals shared across the team was a good sign,” Reynolds said. “One of the good things from this game also was that we scored nine goals in the first half, so there was clear intent and they kept it up in the second half; they didn’t become complacent.” Four goals from Deshawn Byfield and Kajay Fletcher, hat-tricks from Kimani Reece and Kamaul Patterson, a brace from Damaine Smith, and a lone strike from Christano Myers sealed the win for KC. “A statement win, if you may call it that,” Reynolds said. “I thought we did well enough last week Monday against Penwood to have won that game, but we just never executed in front of goal. I asked them to continue on that same vein by creating the chances, but this time, to make use of them. “We just had a little bump in terms of what happened last week Monday, so I said to them it’s better that this happened in our first game so we can learn not to take any team for granted.” KC’s next assignment will be against Jose Marti Technical High on Tuesday at Stadium East. While Reynolds said he is not expecting another lopsided scoreline, he is confident his team can place another good performance. The result also means KC move atop Zone C on goal difference ahead of Penwood, Campion College and Jose Marti. All four have four points from a win and a draw in two matches. Meadowbrook and Cumberland are bottom of the group after losing both matches. gregory.bryce@gleanerjm.com Reynolds says KC’s scoring a ‘good sign’ after walloping Cumberland 18-0 SATURDAY’S RESULTS KC 18 Cumberland 0 STATHS 1 Calabar 0 JC 11 Ascot 0 Excelsior 7 Bridgeport 1 Holy Trinity 0 St Catherine 4 Papine 0 St George’s 10 ASHLEY ANGUIN STAR Writer S tatement delivered! Everton Tomlinson’s charges on The Manning’s School’s senior team participating in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition made clear its message relating to home games. Led by double strikes from Omar Sommerville and Dainton Williams, the Savanna-la-Mar-based institution went on the rampage in a 9-0 drubbing of Godfrey Stewart High, also from Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland. “We want to send a statement that this is a standard we want to maintain to win every game at home convincingly. Having the opportunity to play Godfrey Stewart, that statement was sent,” Tomlinson stated of their emphatic victory. Interestingly, it was an own goal by Devonte Bernard that got The Manning’s School on the scoreboard, the goal coming at the third minute. Sommerville doubled the scoreline with his first goal at the 28th minute and their team would add one more goal before halftime, through Dainton Williams, who scored at the 36th minute. Godfrey Stewart’s diminutive goalkeeper, La Dino Ricketts, was the most active player on the pitch, collecting and saving goals. His workload increased significantly in the second half. Manning’s went further ahead in the 51st minute when Jodon Grey scored, and Sommerville completed his brace in the 62nd minute. Substitute Brandon Parchment, with his first touch, hit home in the 76th minute to make it six-love. And the goals kept coming in as Williams again scored, in the 82nd minute, while Rohan Virgo joined the scoring party in the 85th minute, and in the 89th, 15-year-old Rajon McKenzie scored from the penalty spot to finish off his rivals. “With a win like this, I hope this can boost our confidence and allow us to make progress as we move along,” said Tomlinson. “Even though we think it should be more, but if you score nine, you can’t complain. “Some easy chances were missed,” he added. Michael Graham, the coach of Godfrey Stewart, said the average age of his team is 15 years and they have been preparing for two months. “We never anticipated this scoreline, but that is football, you win some, you lose some. We know Manning’s is a superior team. We just need to build a solid foundation so we can compete in the future. There is a lot of room for improvement,” Graham explained. Continuing, he said: “There are some positives we can take from this game. The players were timid at first, but they got more comfortable in the second half. It will take time,” he added. ashley.anguin@gleanerjm.com We want to send a statement – Manning’s coach Tomlinson SATURDAY’S RESULTS Maldon 0 Cornwall 1 Herbert Morrison 3 St James 0 Grange Hill 1 Black River 2 Holland 0 William Knibb 5 STETHS 1 Lacovia 1 Alston 2 Troy 3 Alphansus Davis 0 Holmwood 1 Bellefield 2 Knox 0 Lennon 0 Clarendon 2 Vere 0 Kemps Hill 2 Glenmuir 2 Garvey Maceo 0 Ferncourt 4 York Castle 3 St Thomas Tech 0 Seaforth 1 Robert Lightbourne 1 Yallahs 6 Morant Bay 1 Happy Grove 3 Iona 1 St Mary High 8 St Mary Tech 1 Titchfield 1 Port Antonio 2 Wycliffe Martin 0 William Knibb 5 Holland 0 Irwin 3 Green Pond 3 Anchovy 1 Rusea’s 0 B.B.
