2 THE STAR NEWS • Wednesday, September 18, 2024 @JamaicaStar www.facebook.com/JamaicaStar • www.jamaica-star.com KALLEJHAY TERRELONGE STAR Writer A fter waiting for more than three months to get hip-replacement surgery, Nicole Solomon is finally home, having done her surgery two weeks ago. Solomon was admitted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) on May 12, after she slid and broke her hip. However, her surgery was delayed because, according to Dr Delroy Fray, the clinical coordinator at the Western Regional Health Authority, a special X-ray machine called a C-AR was down at one of CRH’s operating theatres at the Falmouth Public General Hospital. Then when that was repaired, Hurricane Beryl came and there was a leak in the operating theatre. The theatre’s air-conditioning unit also broke down. This forced Solomon to lie in bed enduring constant pain, and the 45-year-old’s right leg even became infected, resulting in her having to do a procedure to correct the issue. Despite all that agony, what left Solomon most distraught was the fear that she would not be able to attend her mother’s funeral, which was on September 8. But, on August 27, just six days after THE STAR published an article detailing Solomon’s ordeal, she was informed that she would have surgery on September 2. “When they gave me the news I was like ‘That so close’, because my mother’s funeral was the following Sunday. So when they came to me and told me I was going to do surgery, it wasn’t like I was glad. But I felt good that I was going to do it, because I was hoping I would get the opportunity to go to my mom’s funeral,” she said. Solomon was discharged from the CRH on September 6, and was able to witness her mother’s burial. “It made me feel good, because even though mi did have some challenges trying to get a wheelchair to rent…mi did get one in time for the dead yard and the funeral; and mi feel good because I get to see my mother funeral and see her for the last time,” Solomon said. Because of her surgery, she was required to stay off her feet until told otherwise. So to attend the funeral, she had to rent a wheelchair for two days, which cost $10,000. She also told THE STAR that so far, she has done two sessions of physical therapy and has another session next week. Her healing journey is not without its challenges, because upon returning home from the hospital, Solomon learnt that her home had been broken into, and multiple items, including her television, DVD player, pressure cooker and camera were stolen. She has also had challenges purchasing her wheelchair due to limited funds, So, her brother and brother-in-law have to lift her when necessary. Despite all this, Solomon remains in high spirits. “From yuh have life yuh have everything, and I’m just grateful. I’m glad I’m home, and my family is here for me,” Solomon said, adding that after making a full recovery, she plans to return to work.
