C ontributed T he Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reporting that Hanover’s most wanted man, 24-year-old Towayne Gunning, otherwise known as ‘Tuffy,’ has turned himself in to the police. Gunning, a labourer from Rock Spring, surrendered on Tuesday, accompanied by his attorney. Gunning has been on the run since last December, following his alleged involvement in a murder in Green Island. He was also reportedly involved in a shootout with the police on April 2, during which he escaped. He is now facing charges for both incidents. The police have identified him as a person of interest in several other gun-related crimes that have occurred in Hanover, and investigations into these offences will be advanced. Several wanted men have been apprehended across Area One in recent times. Among them is Joseph McKenzie, also known as ‘Jayo,’ who was arrested in St James on August 25, and charged with three murders, one shooting, and possession of a prohibited weapon. Similarly, Michael Williams, otherwise called ‘Dry Goods,’ was apprehended in Bogue, St James, on September 14, and is also facing murder charges. A 40-year-old businessman from Hanover has been charged with assault at common law and possession of a prohibited weapon following an incident in Negril, Westmoreland, earlier this year. Charged is Jerome Clarke, otherwise called ‘Crazy’, a businessman of Point Village, Norman Manley Boulevard. According to reports received from the Negril police, Clarke and the complainant were allegedly involved in an ongoing dispute involving a woman. On May 26, Clarke reportedly approached the complainant as he was entering his motor vehicle on Norman Manley Boulevard, pulled a firearm, threatened to kill the complainant and then left. On Monday, Clarke turned himself in to the Negril police in the presence of his attorney. He was subsequently charged. His court date is being finalised. M ayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, is urging the public to show greater respect for the efforts of municipal officers. He made the appeal during the St James Municipal Corporation Police Unit’s 20th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service, held at the Open Bible Church in Mount Salem, on Sunday. The unit currently boasts 19 officers who serve the parish. Vernon said that the role of the municipal police is often misunderstood. “You may often see our officers interacting with vendors on the road, but their role is not to chase vendors or seize their goods, as is commonly perceived,” he explained. “Their responsibility is to ensure that vending is conducted in designated areas, ensuring the safety of pedestrians and the smooth flow of traffic for motorists.” Vernon pointed out that the municipal officers also monitor permits as they relate to vending management, places of amusement, barbers and hairdressers, among several other commercial activities across the municipality. “Our enforcement team will only intervene if these permits are not obtained or if persons fail to comply with the laws governing the activities. The local authority is responsible for ensuring compliance and protecting you as residents,” he noted. A St Elizabeth man is to face the court to answer to the charge of larceny of motor vehicle following his arrest in Westmoreland. Charged is 32-year-old Romel Johnson, otherwise called ‘Tallman’, of Leeds district in Santa Cruz. Reports from the Savanna-la-Mar police are that about 10:30 p.m. on July 24, the complainant parked and securely locked his Toyota Voxy motor car in his yard and retired to bed. Upon waking about 7 a.m. the following day, he discovered that the vehicle was missing. A report was made, and with the help of technology, the police intercepted the motor vehicle in Santa Cruz. Johnson, however, managed to escape. He was apprehended on September 2, and was subsequently charged after a question-and-answer session that was conducted in the presence of his attorney.
