Cornwall, who was named Player of the Match, rebounded from being dropped by the Royals in the previous match to take five for 16 from his four overs, which helped to restrict the floundering Patriots to 110 runs in 19.1 overs. Cornwall received good support from ul-Haq (3-21) and McCoy (2-11). It took knocks from Joshua Da Silva, 25 from 29 balls and tail ender Anrich Nortje, who made 22 from 17 balls, to get the Patriots past the 100 mark. In-form opener Quinton de Kock then struck an unbeaten half century and the Royals wasted little time in chasing down their target, ending on 113 for one in 11.2 overs, to register an emphatic nine-wicket victory. The South African finished unbeaten on 59 from 38 balls with four sixes and three fours, while Alick Athanaze scored 22 not out from 15 balls. The result helped the Royals maintain their grip on top spot with 10 points from their six games, while the Patriots remained rooted at the bottom of the table with a solitary win from their eight games. – CMC Cornwall carries Royals to easy win PARIS, France: J amaica’s female superstar forward Khadija Shaw was unable to travel with Manchester City for yesterday’s Champions League qualifier against Paris FC after the club failed to file a visa application in time. Shaw, Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer, was unable to travel for the first leg of the second- round qualifying match in France. According to reports, Shaw was sent to the French embassy on Tuesday morning in a bid to secure an expedited visa application, but the request was denied. City, Woman’s Super League (WSL) runners-up to Chelsea on goal difference last season, have failed to reach the Champions League group stage in the past three campaigns. The winners of the second-round qualifying tie, of which the second leg takes place on September 26, qualify for the group stage. The 27-year-old Shaw was the top scorer in last season’s WSL, and also won the WSL and Football Writers’ Association Player of the Season awards following a stellar individual 2023-24 season. – CMC Visa issues force Shaw to miss Champions League qualifier Rahkeem Cornwall (centre) celebrates with the Barbados Royals’ skipper Rovman Powell after claiming a wicket against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots during the Caribbean Premier League T20 cricket competition at Kensington Oval on Tuesday night. The 0-0 draws between Manchester City and Inter Milan in their rematch of the 2023 final, after Bologna and Shakhtar Donetsk also could not find a goal, capped an untypically goal-shy evening for the Champions League yesterday. Just 13 were scored in six games, one day after 28 were fired in on Tuesday, including nine by Bayern Munich alone. How unusual was this? Two 0-0 draws after just 12 of 144 games to be played in the new league phase is already halfway to the total of four in 96 games one year ago in the group- stage format that is now abolished. The entire competition averaged three goals per game last season. Paris Saint-Germain and Girona also were heading for a blank until a horrible 90th- minute error by the Spanish debutant’s goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga — spilling a cross by Nuno Mendes through his own legs — gifted a 1-0 win. Borussia Dortmund needed late goals from substitutes Jamie Gittens, twice, and Serhou Guirassy with a stoppage-time penalty to win 3-0 at Club Brugge. The new format has welcomed new faces and long-absent friends in European soccer’s marquee competition. Sparta Prague rose to the challenge of their first game for 19 years at this stage of the Champions League by beating Salzburg 3-0. Bologna waited 60 years to return and deserved more for their attacking ambitions against Champions League veterans Shakhtar. The Ukrainian champions had a penalty saved in the fourth minute by Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski. Slovan Bratislava were overmatched in their first game since 1992-93, the first season of the Champions League rebrand from the old European Cup, and with Georgia defender Guram Kashia making his competition debut at age 37. They could not keep out Celtic, which won 5-1 in Glasgow. Ireland internationals Liam Scales and Adam Idah, Japan forwards Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda, and Arne Engels of Belgium scored for the champions of Scotland. MAN CITY HELD There was nothing to separate the champions of England and Italy, 15 months after Man City beat Inter 1-0 in Istanbul to lift the European Cup trophy for the first time. Ilkay Gundogan wasted two late chances for manager Pep Guardiola’s team, failing to convert two headed chances. It was the first time City had failed to score at home in Europe’s elite tournament since being held 0-0 by Sporting Lisbon in March 2022, and just the second time at home in all competitions since then. The other was a 0-0 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League in March. But the result saw City extend their six-year unbeaten home run in European games to 32, dating back to a 2-1 loss to Lyon. – AP Man City, Inter Milan draw 0-0 Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (right) shoots during their 0-0 Champions League opening phase soccer match against Inter Milan in Manchester, England, yesterday. aP
