ORANE BUCHANAN Staff Reporter H ead coach of Camperdown High, Lebert Halliman, believes the 2024 season of the ISSA/WATA Manning Cup football competition will be a tough one for his boys, based on the lack of resources at his disposal. “If you noticed we only had two changes on the bench as we don’t have enough resources. We’re not getting that support and it’s like getting basket to carry water,” Halliman related. “I think the boys tried, but we don’t have a football culture at the moment,” the veteran coach explained. Those comments came after his team’s 2-0 defeat against Group D opponents St Andrew Technical High School at Boys’ Town FC’s playing field yesterday. STATHS started off with their feet on the gas pedal, making their intentions known as early as the second minute when Howard Linton fired a powerful right- footed shot on to the upright. As they continued their press for an early goal, STATHS were rewarded in the 15th minute, courtesy of a strike from Ajetai Marshall. Those wake up calls drummed up a more spirited defensive work from Camperdown who slowly grew into the game and kept the STATHS offence at bay for the remainder of the first half. In the second half, chances were few and far between as both teams cancelled out any goal-bound effort. However, in the final five minutes of action STATHS went in search of the insurance goal, which came in the dying moments of the game courtesy of a Christiano Brown goal. In his post-game assessment, Phillip Williams, head coach of STATHS, shared that he expected a tough game due to the nature of the group. “We got the three points. However, we know it’s going to be a tight zone. It was a tough game as we played without three of our regular players. It’s a very tough zone and we have to gather the points so we’re thankful for that,” he stated. orane.buchanan@gleanerjm.com 22 THE STAR SPORTS • Thursday, September 19, 2024 @JamaicaStar www.facebook.com/JamaicaStar • www.jamaica-star.com LIST PRICES ONE DAY ONLY SALE.
